Default Help with 86' 240

Hello all,

Hopefully you guys can help me or point me in the right direction (already tried searching these forums). My sister has a 4dr 86' 240 sedan. She called me this morning and indicated she "ran out of gas in her driveway" and thatthe car willstart and attempt to run but will stall after a second. So, not wanting to ask a bunch of questions over the phoneIdrive overto her house with some petrol. And after emptying my gas can intothe car'stankand trying to start it up, it did the exact same thing as she described, started, fired up, andimmediately died. The fact isshe drove the car yesterday and parked it with the fuel gauge reading at the very top of the RED towards empty and then encountered this problemthe followingmorning (today).Obviously she didn't run out of gas LOL!

At this point I decided to check everything I knew to check.

I checked the oil level, fine

Looked forany leaking fluids, none

Made sure the fuel pumpsounded like it was clicking on. It did.

Looked for any badly wornor un hooked hoses or wiresunder the hood. The only oneI noticed was1 coming from the intake leading to the firewall, it is quite prominent where it is connected to the intake, but turns into a small rubber hose as itheads toward thefirewall which iswhere I found it disconnected. I tried toplug it back in butthat made no difference whatsoever with the starting problem.

I am thinking thefuel filter might be the culprit. Is there a certain procedurefor checking a fuel filter on a Volvo? Any tutorials or info would be VERY MUCH APPRECIATED!

Thanks in advance,

James

I suspect the in-tank prepump (transfer pump). Sometimes the problem shows up when the tank is low on gas. Itwould help to be able tomeasure the fuel pressure between the transfer pump and the main pump, but not something I would attempt.

when was the fuel filter changed? perhaps replace with new if too old.
-check/replace the fuel pump relay.
-check the fuses, make sure that all connection points are clean and tight.
-be sure about the condition of both fuel pumps.
-check all vacuum lines for leak, or failure.

Is it just stalling while in park or when you put it in gear. If when in gear check the battery to solenoid connection. I had that problem.

I encountered a problem similar to this in a 850 last year. The problem was the ignition switch. It would run when in the start position and die when returned to the run position. I discovered this by starting the car then easily rotated the key back till the starter stopped. The car stayed running then died if I let the key return to the normal run position.
