Default HELP!! HELP!! 240 DL repair / main pre fuel pumps

Hi all -

1985 240 DL non turbo 2,3 li engine

Was driving down the road the other day and the fuel pump cut out (have been hearing the winning sound when attempting to accelerate and go faster. I believe after looking around on the web that is the problem

So I went out and bought the fuel pump relay and replaced the fuses - doesnt work / not working

So I decided to fix both fuel pumps - fixed the main and the in tank pre pump this morning. Also put in a new fuel filter***

So I got to start the car and it starts but is still ideling rough and sounds like its not getting enough fuel also the fuel gauge not working.

I look underneath and the neck around the fuel filter is spraying out fuel, so i say hey i need to just tighten that up and everything will be ok right?

I tighten up the fuel filter neck bolt (the second one before heading to engine) and go to start the car and IT WONT START but the gas gauge is working now.

Is it not working because the pre pump is now working? Is the wiring bad?

I have no clue what to do now any help is MUCH APPRECIATED!!!

Thank you

I suggest you disconnect the battery and go check things out calmly with plenty of light. Fuel filters the banjo fitting for the fuel filter has a copper washer on both sides. These should usually be replaced when you change the filter. Try to gently snug the banjo fitting up.

it wont start because you have insufficient fuel pressure because you have a leak at the fuel filter.

After the fuel filter was spraying out fuel I unplugged the battery (have been doing this every time i mess with gas) and I tightened up the banjo fitting

1 - can i tighten the banjo fitting to much?
2 - does the banjo fitting need to be in a correct alignment to the fuel filter?

THANKS

here's the parts diagram of the 240 fuel pump and filter...

I'd probably take it apart, and make sure the washers are correctly installed and not scored, make sure the banjo fitting is not cracked or damanged, and make sure the threads aren't cross threaded, then reassemble it carefully.

Yea it's fine when I tightened the banjo down. And it didnt leak at all but now it won't start cause there's no fuel getting to the motor

hmm. check the voltage at the fuel pump wiring?

the fuel pump doesn't run until the engine is turning over, except later systems will run it about a second when you first turn on the key.

if this is a 240? yeah, ok, open the fuse panel, hook a volt meter up to the fuel pump fuse and a handy ground (mine has a ground screw under the dash just above the fuse panel), and turn the starter, you should see 12V .... if you don't, go check the fuel pump relay again.

Ok I'll. Check it tomorrow. I just replaced the relay with a new one. It just ponders me why just tightenting the banjo screw would cut off fuel

If you have any more ideas let me know

Thanks a bunch!

I had a similar thing happen to me when I replaced the battery and did not realize that a small wire on the positive side belong to the pre pump.....I had tightened the + battery terminal/connector without including the small 10 gauge(maybe) wire that was linked with it....this particular wire was almost cut at a section....corroded as the car was a beach wagon all it's life.

got it to work today -

check every connection including the battery terminal and the fuse running off of that

Solved the fuel filter leak by heating up the copper washer on the stove and dropping it into some water then "smashing" it on the fuel filter, really need some air tools

Car runs now

The only problem is that the exhaust is smoking could this just be from the fuel?

Also i can hear both pumps going, previous i couldnt hear anything

cold engines will have a little steam in the exhaust even under the best of conditions, it should go away after they are warmed up.

if its blue smoke, its probably oil, which can get in from worn valve stems or piston rings. again, a little at startup on an old car, oh well. if it continues to spew blue smoke heavily while you're driving, you got problems.
