Default Help Diagnose My 88 240

thanks for helping

this is an 88 240 DL wagon with high miles but was running great. while driving at 40 mph with no warning the engine just quit. now it turns over but does not even pop. right when it died the oil light came on, but it has plenty of oil. i pulled the wire that comes off the coil and had someone turn over the engine, i felt no juice while holding the wire with a wet hand, i also pulled a plug and had the engine turned and saw no spark. i already tested things with a brand new coil and saw/felt no spark then. next i opened the fuel line right where it goes into the fuel rail and had the engine turned over, no fuel came spitting out. i replaced the relay under the passenger side dash and still no fuel. so... in summation... no fuel and no spark. is this an unlikely way to have a car die? in the past on other cars i have seen a spark or felt one, is the volvo electric system lower in power such that it may have spark but i just can't feel the shock? is there a computer that could die such that it would kill both fuel delivery and sparking power?

thanks again for any ideas,

tap white fuel pump relay with finger see if it starts (you did use volvo not aftermarket)

if no unplug air mass sensor and see if it starts, If it starts unpugged then you probably need an air mass sensor. obtained reasonably at www.car-part.com. If no replug

things get more difficult from here.

Could be the electrical part of the ignition switch, they are known to go bad. You should have 12v on the black/red wire that goes to speedo (it feeds the coil, etc from there) Let us know what you find.

Could also be a bad speed sensor.

Hey whats up? this is my first post man, But any-Hoo I own a 91 240 with 289,000 I have had it like 10 years man. Anyway I would be lookin at the secondary fuel pump man on the fuel thing. I got nothing on the spark deal, maybe your battery is jacked uped. Change that Fuel Pump Relay (white box under passenger side) it's like $30 beans. I don't know where your located but get with Swedish Engineering they have like three locations Nation wide and they will hook you up man. Maybe look at your Coil I got a new one a few years back, and a secondary fuel pump, there are two on my 91, maybe there are two on yours. Let me know whats up man.

i already replaced the white fuel relay on the passenger side under the glove box with one from a friends car that we know works. i also installed a new coil from napa which they were nice enough to let me return when it did not help. i like the air mass sensor idea, i will try that today. thanks.
