How to get more power and better looks out of a 240 DL
I Just got myself a 1989 volvo 240 DL for free!!!! It only has 60,000 original miles on it. Its an automatic also. I was just wondering if anyone knew of any performence parts or body accessories like body kits, etc....for these cars and can help me out with some info about it. Why would you want to change it's looks? This now vintage car was far ahead of its time so much so more and more cars strive for the room it has inside and some even are going more square like, ie: scion, high end MB suv and others. Be proud of your 240 - keep her stock, keep her running.

anyways, performance-wise. there are many options to retrofit the VOLVO block or to disregard what the Volvo has and weld in a foundry v8. search around look into forums for performance and the such. there are also Volvo-specific tuning companies out there.

Ignore Tech and what the others said about leaving it stock. Try www.turbobricks.comfor some good information. Welcome to the addiction!

Don't ignore them, they have a point.
Your N/A and yes you can do a few mods and possbly gain a few horses. But your not going to gain much like if you have a turboed Volvo.
Turbobricks is a great site and I suggest you go over there, but they are going to say the same thing.
Turbo = POWER.
N/A = No power potential, unless you do a mosterous buildup.

For more power, here's a short list of the steps:
1) Change part of the drivetrain
2) Remove part of the drivetrain
You can pick up about your first second worth of acceleration advantage in the quarter mile for free. Ditch the spare tire and the rear seats, advance the distributor until you hear pinging then back it off a degree or two, ditch the intake snorkels attached to the airbox, and hack the exhaust off after the resonator.
Volvos are like legos. They get faster easily.
To get better looks, buy a Ferrari. It's a Volvo. Contrary to popular belief, they aren't that pretty. If you slightly lower one and put Polaris rims on it, it's helpful though.

I see nothing wrong with a monsterous buildup, do you? There's alot more that can be done to an N/Athan a cam and there's plenty of things that can make it a more distinctive looking vehicle. Just as long as he doesn't take the path of Coconut Colin. Then we'll have to hang him...

Yes there is a ton that can be done. I just started off saying what the best options are.
Cam in stock motor or V-8.
The rest can be researched to gain a ton more.
That is what the forums are for to get everyones opinions.

And you should keep in mind that whatever $ you sink in it it will be just that, sunk, as you'll not get any of it back at resale... speaking from years of experience.

BUT if you wanted another Volvo down the line and somehow could remove the mods easily and transfer them to...any RWD Volvo with a redblock made between 1976-1995, return your old car to stock and then somehow sell it, then it'd make more financial sense.
I turbocharged my 83 245DL for less than $200 in junkyard parts and went 14.59@95mph in the quarter mile like that. Thats about 90hp for $200. So yeah, there are some things you can do.

More power
I agree completely. wake up and love that 240, when it comes to good looks it doesn't get much better than a 240.

Hello I'm new to this group. I just inherited my mom's 1993 240 wagon. I love this car wouldn't change anything but it does need more power what is the best way to get some more out of it.

You could probably make the car faster by simply removing the spare tire and all the stored stuff in the car!
If you really wanted more power the easiest might be to put a 940 turbo motor w/intercooler/oil cooler. And others have installed a modern ford of chevy v-6/8! But neither would not be a plug and play type of change.

Genetics
Volvo 200s like its predecessors are tall and narrow. That’s not a performance design. They are designed to be safe reliable transportation for families in countries that still had many narrow roads and streets. Its performance is its longevity and safety. If that’s not what you want pass it on to someone who does.
If you want speed and handling buy an old Comaro or Mustang. They have V8s, strong transmissions, and room for big tires. Be happy with that potential. You can polish it and thrash it and not lose much money.
