Default how to haul 740 wagon on tow dolly?

Traveling from Chicago to Austin soon, will be hauling car behind rental truck on tow dolly. I've read you can haul it w front wheels on ground or rear wheels.

Which way is best or does it matter? What do I have to do for each configuration?

I prefer a front lift. If the car is auto, disconnect tailshaft at differential. If manual, no problems.

the standard procedure is to lift the drive wheels on an automatic tranny car, as the tranny will have no oil flow when you're towing

Default Trailer instead

Pierce is right, towing with the drive wheels on the ground is the same as driving with no lubrication. Don't do it.

I have dollyed a car only once. The best thing: get a full size car trailer with two axles and carry the car, don't drag it.

Do note, a full sized trailer for a 745 will be _huge_ and heavy, as the 745 is 3200 lb curb weight to start with, the trailer likely will be 1200-2000 lbs empty, for a tow weight of 5000+ lbs, and about 500-1000 of that on your truck's hitch, which has to be subtracted from the trucks' rear axle VWR. 5000 lbs is about the upper limit of what can be towed with a conventional class III/IV ball hitch, anything more than that gets you into 5th wheel territory.

I'm with Typhoon. Only thing I would add is that you want to mark the position of the driveshaft when you disconnect it so you don't mess up the balance. You don't necessarily have to remove the driveshaft; I've gotten away with just disconnecting it at the rear and wiring it in place off to the side a bit, so it doesn't drag.

Welcome to Texas, in advance..

That's the way to go, Just get under the car, whiz out four bolts and tie the driveshaft up out of the way. Be mindful of suspension movement, I like to get the driveshaft away at a good angle from the diff centre.
The rear suspension is by far the better one to tow with, and for some good reasons.
Firstly you don't have to tie off the wheel (never EVER rely on a steering lock to hold the wheels dead ahead on a towed vehicle), the rear suspension is generally more rugged. Secondly, when a car is towed backwards, the nice caster built in to the front suspension disappears and toe in becomes toe out. Cars towed backwards are definitely more flighty than a front lift tow. I should also add, I put a light board on the back of cars I tow, they are readily available from marine or trailer stores and if it's a long tow, it's worth it for the peace of mind in traffic. They cost about $60 here ( I can't see them being much more over there) and you can always re sell it if you never use it again.
Trust me, I used to drive a cradle lift tow truck.

a light board, or magnetic lights are absolutely mandated by towing laws in many(most?) states.
