How identify the type of steering rack on 240?

Hello Volvo Priests - I want to replace the two ends on my 30 year old steering linkage. I was told there are two 'types' of racks for a 240. Anyone know about this?

you're supposed to be able to tell by the rubber booties, one type tapers down and clamps directly to the tie rod shaft, the other type has a rubber disk on the shaft. one type uses inner tie rod ball joints that have an 'outer thread', the other type uses an 'inner thread'
HOWEVER, our 87 had one type of boots, but the other type of tie rod ends, go figger.
THat all said, I forget which is supposed to be what. I think IPDusa.com has some stuff on this when you drill down to volvo 240 steering rod bits.
