Question How much can my 240 tow?

I have a 1984 Volvo 244 GL non-turbo, 2.3L 4-cyl engine.

I just bought a BIG travel trailer that I know it can not tow, it's probably about 5000 lbs. But I was wondering, how much CAN my 244 tow? Is there any way to rig it to tow something so heavy? and does anyone know where I can get equipment to put a towing kit on my Volvo for a good price?

Any info is appreciated, thanks!!

To safely tow something that heavy, you'll need a half ton truck, at the least. I am not sure I would trust your car to tow anything bigger than a single jet ski. Honestly. I have logged over a half a million miles with something in tow, in either an F-350, Suburban, F-250, or Hummer. You'd kill your driveline trying to tow anything more than 500 pounds.

Thanks for the input, but I know from the Volvo manufacturer that it is safe to tow at least 3,000 lbs in many Volvo's. My 1991 740 was cleared by Volvo to tow 3,300 lbs. Just one of the many reasons that Volvo is a proven, quality car.

I am interested if anyone knows the exact listed towing capacity from Volvo for my particular model though.

Thank you, that had info straight from the owners manual (which I don't have). I really appreciate it.

For anyone else reading this who's interested: Max tow weight for the 240 is 3,300 lbs up to 50 mph, OR 3,500 up to 45 mph. You should get about 20 MPG towing with an automatic transmission and a little better with manual.

I agree that I would NEVER tow something even close to that weight with a 20 year old 4 cylinder car. That's impressive though that Volvo was confident enough to put that in the owner manual. What a car.
