Default How much can i tow with the Volvo?

I may have to do some long distance moving in a few months. Im thinking of using a 5x10 closed trailer.I have a hitch and everything. I would be loading it up with at least 1200 lbs along with the weight of the trailer which is 1250. I will also have another 800 lbs in the car including luggage and passengers. Wil the volvo be able to handle this?
Here is a link to the trailer i am tinking about. According to Uhaul i can pull this as long as i have a class 2 hitch which i believe i have.

BTW its for a 25 hour haul on the highway, and the wagon is automatic.

After searching a bit, Im pretty sure i will have to install a tranny cooler as. I have also read that in order to avoid frying the transmission, I would have to leave it in 3rd gear to keep the temps down? Can someone confirm this? and 3rd gear for 25 hours???

Hi Ali,

If possible, referto the owner's manual or Haynes/Chilton's service manual for towing capacity. Also, before the trip, double-check on the engine oil, coolant, ATF & brake fluid level & conditions.

Have a safe trip.

The 4x8 looks doable to me, but keep towing capacity within limits. It should be in your owners manual. Good luck.

I plan on towing a pop up trailer with my volvo 850 turbo wagon (20 valve). I noticed he mentioned a tranny cooler in his previous question. My question is " does my volvo already have a tranny cooler installed at factory or how can I tell if mine has one? I know I have tranny lines going into the rad already.

you do not have one stock, and i dont know of any trans lines going directly to the radiator.... ?!?! *confused*

trans coolers look like mini 8inx11inx1in radiators and get outed off to the side usualy.

On the turbo there are transmission lines going into the radiator. Not sure about the non turbo. Personally I would not tow more than 2000-2500 lbs.

I know it may not be totally relevant, but I have a 960 and I towed the same uhaul 4x8 from Montana to California without issue. I definitely had similar weight conditions, and I was able to tow in "D" and go 70mph on flat ground with no issues at all. When I started getting into hilly country "3" and 60 or so mph was no issue at all. I do have a stock tranny cooler though, which probably helped. Since the 850 is FWD and has pretty similar HP, I would think that you wouldn't have many issues.
