Default if you have starting issues.

My 740gl '89 finally died on me the other day and I gave up diagnosing the problem. So, I took it to the mechanics. Inaddition to a bad wiring job of the External pump by me, the mechanic told me that the main relay was also going bad on me and giving me problems. This starting problem had been such a headache to get it fixed. Thank God it's over for now.

The point is if you are having starting problems were your motor will turn over, but not ignite. Remember to check the main relay. Mine was attached to the fender sidewall on the passenger side.

No I mean main relay, it might have another part name, but the mechanic listed it as "replace Main Relay" on the work order, and charged me for "Relay". As I said, it is hooked on to the passenger side inside fender, or at least on mine. I'll get a part number and manufacturer when my wife comes home.

I think this is also called the fuel pump relay.

If they have a date code on the relay date pre-1991, replace it.

I'm not sure what relay that is, but here is a link to a picture of the fuel pump relay. It is located in the main fuse box behind the ashtray. The date code will be on the side of the case.

Beardog - Thanks for the info. I have been having the same problems, slowly getting worse until the car has been sitting for a month because i am afraid to take it anywhere. I am curious if your problem is still solved by this relay replacement and if you wouldn't mind sharing how much it cost?
Thanks.

I had multiple starting problems in addition to this, I had eliminated most of them, but finally gave up by this time.

From the mechanic $40.00, Not sure where to get it. Kragen's does not list it on partsamerica.com, or not under what I'm looking for it.

Mechanic did a diagnostic test and figured out my wiring on the external pump in addition was giving me problems. I could never could figure out what this partwas for, so I never even bothered to look at it.

If anyone can tell me how to post pictures, I will take a picture the followingweekend and show you where it was on mine.

Thanks a lot. My problem is that it almost starts the first time, or starts and stalls right away. Then it just cranks and cranks till i wear the battery down. I just didn't want to start replacing parts and run up a big bill in doing so until someone came up with an answer. I think I know exactly what you're talking about, but if you figure out how to post pics, that would be even better.
