Default Ignition Coil Too Hot to Touch?

Have an early 80's 240 that usually runs great. Every once in a while the fuel pumps will just shut off while driving and stall the car. Usually it will start right back up again or certainly within a minute or two and run ok. I put in a new fuel pump relay thinking that was the problem but it still does it.

I've noticed that the ignition coil gets really hot and was wondering if that could have something to do with it? I heard somewhere that if the ECU senses a problem in the ignition circuit, it will shut off the fuel pumps. Does anyone know how hot the ignition coil should get or if this could be my problem? Mine get too hot to touch after about 10-15 minutes. What actually turns the fuel pump relay on and off?

Thanks a lot

early 80s could mean a K-Jet or LH-II or LH2.2 car depending on the year. the ECUs are totally different for K-Jet (aka CIS) than for LH (EFI)

My car is an '83 with the Jetronic ECU if this helps. But regarding the ignition coil, how hot should it be after about 15 minutes? Mine is nearly too hot to touch. Is this normal? Does anyone know?

coils get pretty warm, but they shouldn't be getting 'hot'. I'd wonder if the ignition power module isn't having a problem and dumping too much DC current into the coil or something. I'm not real familiar with the jetronic cars.
