Default Installed new Head Gasket Set.... messed up timming gears

Ok so i am in the process of selling this old turbo brick and i decided it would be fun to work on it and fix it up before it sells. Bad idea....

cut to the chase..

Problem:
-Timing belt is possibly off
-car idles muddy
-white smoke comes from engine block + turbo

Question:
-How do i set the timming correctly?
-What the hell is the white smoke?

Notes:
-There are notches on both gears and i tried to line the up correctly
-First time starting after putting it all back together
-Engine turns over but runs with a boggy/muddy tone
-Engine was sprayed with alot of wd40/degreaser a few days earlier
-replaced main header, intake, and exhasut gaskets
-engine hasnt been ran for more than 3 sec without being turned off (afraid something is wrong and dont want to mess it up)

This is how the gears are alligned

Some smoke came from the turbo\exhaust along with a small burst of leaking oil from the middle nut(next to the big gray pipe).

Congrats!

BTW...I am getting ready to do the same task with mine for the first time (for me of course..not the car) Why does the manuals say that it is necessary to remove the pulley for the water pump? It does not route around the pulley so why the step? Did you see the necessity for it in your dealings with the timing belt. How bout removal of the radiator. There seems to be plenty of clearance for removing the timing belt without removing it. Did you remove yours?

Again glad you got it nailed! Thanks for YOUR input on this.

Hi turbo940...

Don't use WD-40 on anything that will heat up. It will turn to gel (yellow glaze) and screw things up. Only use it to loosen certainparts....

Good luck....

No i didnt have to remove water pump or radiator... just the fan shround was enough.

I ran into a problem and lost my spring from the timming belt tensioner... anyone know where i can get another one?

distro cap is in the back and i cant fit a screw driver in there to pull it out without taking off the whole top end(i dont think)?

I was a little confused because the crank shaft pulley had 2 markings:
one on the actual gear, then theres a think piece of metal that keeps the belt on track(covers the mark on the pulley), this metal has a notch on it that i lined up.

So first thing i do to line it up to the #1 piston is turn the crank marks to line up as so in this pic:

then i line up this gear:

Im lost as to what i do after this?

Do i put on the belt and tension it?
Doesnt setting the upper pulley to that top mark set the dsitro cap to plug one or will i have to ignore the mark and make sure it lands on the first spark plug?

At this point check the #1 piston is at TDC and distributor rotor points at #1 spark plug wire.

The timing belt tensioner spring, just change the whole unit.

if all the markings are lined up it should start. the crank pulley has a mark on it ,that should be lined up with a mark o the engine or the gard for the timing belt(not marking on the timing belt)..good luck
