Default Installing Plastic Shifter Cover (auto)

Hello,

I have a 1987 240DL that is missing the plastic shifter cover, this thing, so I bought one on e-bay, but now I don't see an easy way to take the shifter nub off the top to install it... uh oh. Is it a major PITA to take enough stuff apart that you can actually get the shifter cover over the fat top part of the shifter?

my daughter's 240 shift bezel (tan, the most brittle color) was broken, so I scored a black replacement, and carefully slit it in the middle of the most forward side (using a fine tooth hacksaw blade), and then put it on. with the 2 screws in place on either side of the cut, you can't even tell.
