Default Instrument cluster ?

Decided to replace the stereo in my wagon last weekend. upon removing the pos deck installed by the previous owner all the smoke came out of the wires and circuits to the instrument cluster. YAY!!!! I want to find the guy who hacked up the wiring back there and hang him. On the other hand I should have known better than to play with any of that stuff with the battery connected.

My car is a 93 245 with ABS and m47 tranny.
Can I replace the cluster with a non abs unit without affecting the actual functionality of the ABS system? I ask only because the K39200 cluster that is in it now is very hard to come by and more expensive than the other non abs units i've seen. If I find say a 92 wagon cluster non abs will everything still work minus the ABS light? or will I end up screwing up something else? Thanks

the ABS and non-ABS cars have different speedometers, as the 'tone ring' in the rear differential on an ABS car has a whole lot more notches in it. so if you put a non-ABS speedometer in a ABS car, it will read hugely wrong.

Are you sure that you fried your cluster? There is a little plastic fuse that runs just below the speedometer that looks like a plastic flexible circuit. If this is what fried, then you can just replace this part with one from just about any cluster. All power to the cluster main board goes through this fuse.

As Pierce said, the ABS clusters are different than non-ABS. However, I think all 240s in '92 & '93 have the ABS cluster regardless if the car had ABS or not.

Good luck

I see. So I guess I will be in the market for an ABS cluster. The flexible fuse on the back of the unit somehow miraculously survived the meltdown, but the speedo is trashed. Thanks guys.
