Default Interesting Problems

I recently bought an '89 Volvo 740 GL. It's a really great car, engine, and transmission wise, and it doesn't have that many miles on it. I got it from a friend for pretty cheap, and now i want to fix the problems with it.
(1) My mechanic says that it needs new alignment (pulls right), new tires, and new shocks. However, i have no idea how much it costs to buy and install shocks, any ideas?

(2) The spedometer/odometer/trip meter does not work, can i fix this myself, or do i have to take it to a mechanic.

(3) (weirdest problem), whenever i turn my brights on, or I turn my left turn signal on, the windshield wipers turn on. I figure a wire or two is crossed in the electrical, but i don't know where to locate these wires, any help?

The car came with no manuals what so ever, so i don't even know what some of the buttons do, if anyone can help me with this part, it would be appreciated. Also, if anyone has any diagrams of the electrical system, or computer files of the manuals, it would be greatly appreciated.

On the very left side of the dash (inline with the wheel), there is the switch to turn on the lights. If i turn it to the right once, the parking lights come on, if i turn it to the next step, the driving lights come on. To the right of this ****, there are two switches. One has this symbol =D (lights) with a wavy line though it. The other has the same symbol with a straight line through it. When i press the first one, there is a red light that comes on, the second one has a green light. I have no idea what either of these two buttons do, and i don't notice any differences to the lights when i press them (perhaps, it's supposed to do something, but the electrical is messed up here as well. Farther off to the right, (just off to the side of the wheel) is a button that looks like a Trident. (It's a Line with a three prongs coming out the top). I don't know what this button does either, any help?

1) Decent shocks are about $100/150 USD a pair plus labor.

2) the speedo may need a motor or just a gear, the IPD website has the parts and a video for sale that will help you fix it if you are so inclined.

3) That IS weird. First check all the fuses in the center conmsole under the ash tray.

You can buy a half-decent manual at auto parts stores, I have a Chilton's.

Another good source of information is the Brickboard 700/900 FAQs

The ignition must be on for the headlamps to work with the switch...that saves the battery in case you forget to turn the lights off.

The wavy line switch is for rear fog lamps (looks like a brake light is lit) the straight line is for driving lamps.

I think the trident is dash panel light dimmer?

The trident switch is a switch for the power antenna so that (when off) the antenna will remain down when the radio is on. Otherwise if you want to listen to a cd, the antenna will go up unnecessarily.
