very clean leather interior and shiny creamy color. Beuatiful car with 113,000 miles on it. paid 2,500.

Seems to run a little hot though. I bought one of those no contact thermometers that you can point at a distant object and get its surface temp. When the guage is almost 3/4 of the way, the engine surface appears to be around 195 degrees a the hottest places and the surface of the radiator around 120 degrees. These are not high tempertatures, I've seen over heated engines and you cannot get nearthem. I think the gauge must be faulty? Is it common that the temp gauge can give high readings? Is 3/4 of the way up OK? I thought 1/2 the way was where it was supposed to stay.

No white smoke, hoses are soft,no mixing of oil and water, no missing coolant. Gauge reading is the only high temp signal. Also, it moves up to the midpoint pretty quickly after starting up, then hangs there awhile, before going up a little more. Never got in the red, but came close one time after climbing up a 5 mile incline and then shutting it off a gas station.

I haven't seen the fan ever engage when the motor is off.

 

Yea that isn't right. Mine usually runs at about 1/4 of the way up. You might just need to replace the whole instrument console. It's not hard to do.

 

Might need a new fan clutch.turn the fan clutch is it heavy to move or is it soft if it soft You might need a new one is it heavy your fan clutch is good.
I've said you might need a new fan clutch but I cannot tell is that ur problem hope this helps.

 

I bet you're right. I'm having it looked at Monday.

it might be that the temp compensation board has gone bad. Back in previous posts there are alot of conversations about the temp compensation boards going bad as well as a way to by pass the board. Also ipd has new ones not that expensive....

 

the temp gun do you mean pyrometer? also did you put the theromstat in boiling water?

 

I replaced the fan clutch a couple of weeks ago and it now runs cool. Never goes higher than 9 o'clock.

 

Those temp gauges count for little more than a glorified idiot light. They're heavily compensated, and your engine is pretty darn hot when that needle moves up from midpoint.
