Default Looking to possibly get a 240 for commuting

I am looking to get rid of my 08 Lexus for a "beater" and the 240's keep on popping up for suggestions for older, cheaper, extremely reliable vehicles.

I've had two S70's and they have treated me well

I have a 6 mile round trip commute to the subway station to get into work. So, I am looking for something to get to work and run the possible errand.

There anything to look out for in 240's that I should keep an eye out for? Can I get something decent for <$2000-2500?

What should I expect maintenance to look like? I know how I got bent over with the S70, how do 240's compare with say your "Honda"

Thanks all

Smith- The newest 240s are '93 models, so anything you get will be pretty old. They typically will have high miles- my '89 has 212k. I have a 6 mile commute also (but I dont get on a train) She's had some issues- mostly brakes really. She runs well and generally very reliable. I paid 1100 three years ago and bought it in VA (I live in rusty Syracuse, NY)
there will be things to fix, but just take it as it comes. I do all repairs myself so I'm not a slave to a mechanic. I figured 1100$ was not a big gamble you know. Dave

I think the biggest difference when it comes to maintenance is who performs it. If you are hooked on a crooked mechanic and trust him blindly then you can spend a lot on bad and or unnecessary work. If you know a little and are willing to do a little DIY then a Volvo can be practically the cheapest car you can own. I just bought a 940 from with a long maintenance record from an old couple who were spending $3-4k a year on totally unnecessary and redundant repairs (like ATF change every 6k miles, and a timing belt and tensioner every 25k miles), and I am sure the "professional" Volvo shop was only too happy to take their money. Besides all the unnecessary work (I wonder if it was even done), the prices they were charged were exhorbinant, like 4x what I can get a part for. This is why this forum is a good place to get info and not get ripped off...

this is a 3 year old thread, and its i the 240/740/940 section, not the 850 section.

that said, beware the maintenance and repair bills on a 850, they quickly exceed the value of the car, sadly.
