Loud clicking sound from 1994 940 engine
Guys,
I was traveling this past weekend from Ill. to MS and before I left on the trip I checked oil level, transmission oil level, water level and everything was within limits. Had driven about 300 miles and had to slow down to merge with traffic while changing to a different highway. Upon accelerating at a normal level noticed a loud clicking from the engine I thought. Pulled over to exit and check this out and discovered that at idle speed no noise from engine. Gave it a little throttle and noticed a pretty noisy clicking and clanking from the engine compartment. I had no lights on the instrument panel and water temp was normal.
Had to stay overnight and got family member to bring my dually and trailer to me and we loaded it on trailer and brought it home.
Anyone have any ideas on how to trouble shoot this to find out where the noise is coming from? This is a non-turbo engine.
Any suggestions appreciated katman104

Hey guys,
Am I the only one with a 1994 940 Volvo sedan? Has no one encountered a clattering sound from their 2.3L engine? I need some help here on what to do to isolate whether it is a rod, timing belt slipped a notch, might be an exhaust leak, whatever it might be. It has no miss in engine, no loss of power and still would shift fine when I shut the engine down last Friday. I have not started it since.I will try something if someone has a suggestion. Any help greatly appreciated.

Hard to diagnose a noise you can't hear... If you have no noise at idle but noise at higher speed, this sounds like an oil starvation problem, internal, may be rod knock... How many miles on this motor? Oil service history? These motors are great but they do throw rods now and then... Exhaust leaks sound different than a mechanical clanking, and it will usually be louder when cold.

and I hauled it home on a trailer. Guess I will carry it on to the volvo shop as bad as I hate to. Can't put to much into it because resale is not that much. Timing belt was replaced at 100K miles by volvo dealer.

It's always a good idea to keep a record of expenses; it's the only thing that will ever push me towards letting one of my flock go. All my Volvos have more money in them than market value (particularly when sweat equity is factored in). People who lack the ability, inclination or time to work on their old Volvos probably need to let them go. Paying shop labor rates on a regular basis is just crazy.

Hey Guys,
My son got home from summer camp and investigated the noise and it is a exhaust leak on the back exhaust port.Seems the gasket has sprung a bad leak.Anything in particular we should know before we undertake putting exhaust manifold gaskets on? Thanks for all the help. I am sure glad we do not have to go into the engine.

To all,
Replaced all exhaust gaskets on manifold and this cleared clicking sound up. I just had one gasket, the rear one on passenger side that had blown out a chunk but replaced all since had to remove the manifold and clean all surface areas.Replaced with the Victor Reinz gasket set. It sure is good to have a son that does mechanic work. Glad to have the Volvo back in working condition because it is a beautiful driving vehicle. Thanks to all for the assistance through the forum. my 92 745T did much the same thing last week, and in my case, its apparently a blown head gasket between #3 and #4 (compression is down on both of those, and they apparently are sharing some compression). Mechanic is taking the head off next week, so we'll know more.
there's no coolant in the oil or oil in the coolant, which is what has happened both other times I've had a blown gasket.
