My 1987 740 turbo runs fine, it seems, but has a loud clicking noise every few seconds. I put a stethoscope on the valve cover, turbo, radiator, water pump, and various other parts, but can't isolate the sound.

Anybody have any ideas?

that should be your compressor

 

Actually, it turned out to be a dying waterpump.
