Default maintaing the paint in winter

[it's sort of a newbie question...] Recently I got a 240 wagon which was garaged and used only in summer at least by previous owner. The car has some rust, but the paint was in an overall very decent shape, when I just got the car. Now it's kept on the street, and I wonder if I can protect the paint from deteriorating in some way? Would waxing help? Which product would you recommend?

any decent car wax. for ease of use, I like Meguiar's "Cleaner Wax", it goes on easy, it buffs off easy. its not the most durable thing, but its easy on the paint.
