Default Make speedo r,0960 work?

Geez, I got this speedo off of ebay, looked like it was a r,0960 from the picture and I have the r,0980. Anybody know if I can make the 0960 work? Change a simple gear or something? or do I need to find a 0980 replacement? I presume that with the 0960 my speed will be incorrect.

1980 GL, 3 speed auto, 4 cyl, B21. Thanks, Mike

What is the Visual difference?

I thought there was only one setup for the Cars with the speedo cables.

Visually they are both the same. I've been cruising the internet, looks like the r,960 is for a wagon that has different tire sizes and possibly a different gear in the trans or rear end. Sounds like I've got a speedo that will not read right and I do have to have the r,980.

I had another speedo, replaced the sprocket gear, but the obometer works until the car gets hot physically (in the cab). Got another one off ebay, fixed it's split sprocket gear too and it does the same thing! Odometer stops working when the car gets hot! These speedos are driving me nuts! Anybody know a good speedo repair?

Thanks, Mike

Yep, speedo works, odometer stops... I'm cruising the internet for this same problem. I've already repaired two speedos, fixing the typical broken 14 tooth gear, but both have the same problem. I live in So Cal with LA being the closest. Any recommendations for speedometer repair shops? Thanks, Mike

I've actually been successful and pulling apart 2 speedos and replacing the broken odometer gear (14 tooth on my 1980 240). Now I have to pull it apart and replace the metal gear as it's slipping on the shaft when the car gets hot. Yep, can you believe it? Jeff Caplan helped me diagnose the problem and I am getting the metal gear from him also:

His other gear worked great, I'm waiting for the metal gear replacement, should be in this week. Jeff can also tell you how to open your speedo. Here's a couple of web sites showing you how to fix the odometer gear. Note that the metal gear I am having problems with is just on the other side of the odometer gear mentioned in the web sites.
