Need help with my 1994 940
Just recently my 940 sedan has developed a problem that i believe is fuel related. The car will turn over and run but only for about 5 seconds then shuts down. I loosened the fuel line to the injectors and there is gas there but it doesnt seem to have any pressure there. I know the fuel filter hasnt been replaced in about 55,000 miles. Would this be a good place to start? And can anyone tell me where it is located? Any help here would be greatly appreciated

the fuel filter is under the car, forward of the gas tank. depending on which setup you have there may be a main fuel pump right next to it. if you have a external main pump, there is also a 'transfer pump' in the gas tank. if you don't have a external main pump, then the pump inside the gas tank /is/ the main pump. Origiinally, Bosch LH injected cars had dual pumps and Regina injection had the single pump, but the last year or so of production, the Bosch cars also switched to a single pump.

hi pierce-----thanx for the response i did locate the fuel pump/filter assy. under the car it is a nasty looking thing that looks like it could be original. all hose clamps and hoses are rusted and rotted. since i am getting fuel up to the injector assy. do you think this might even be an issue? i can hear the relay click when i turn the key on also and im kinda thinking maybe ignition module perhaps? any feedback is appreciated. dave

...could be the fuel pump relay... on one of my 740s, it would randomly stall but then start up immediately. On one of my 850s, it would fail after I turned it off when hot.. needed to cool down for about 15 min. before it would start again. Fuel pump relay fixed both. I would definitely change the filter if it's been 55k miles. That can't help either! That relay is probably original and should be changed anyway as part of the troubleshooting, IMO.

I NEVER change fuel filters unless I get the right symptom which is fuel starvation under high demand, which is to say almost never...
Generally there is a tendency to change way too many parts as a way of the shotgun approach to solving problems. This unfortunately in many cases creates more problems than it solves, plus it costs money... Correctly diagnosing car trouble is becoming a lost art...
