New (to me) Volvo 240 Totalled!
I just bought a 1982 Volvo GL in amazing condition with less than 70,000 original miles on it and some drunk pinned me and my fiancee between him and concrete divider the other night. Now the insurance company is calling this a total loss as there's damage all along one side.
How can I make this situation better? The other driver left the scene and the cops found him later. I just got this car and I really love it. I'd love to be able to salvage the whole situation.
Do I just have to bite the bullet and get another one? I am really distressed about this. Any tips, comments or suggestions are welcomee.

PS - this car performed exactly as it should have. 40mph on wet roads - pinned between a concrete divider and a large SUV and this car kept us feeling safe the whole time. I am DEFINITELY buying another Volvo.

It is mainly body damage and it doesn't seem to be too bad at that, but I can't say. I don't really know how to assess and I haven't really had time to check the car out. It's on the other side of town (in another city, really) and I had a plane to catch so I didn't get to check it out so well. It was also pouring at the time, so I couldn't really see. The passenger's side door won't open and there's minor damage down the passenger & driver's side.
The part shown is the worst part. As for the engine, I'm not sure - it felt like a mount had been broken. The assessor said at a glance, the body work alone is in excess of $2000 & he wanted to declare it a total loss. I'm not sure what to do next.

It really doesn't look like much, does it?

Okay - just drove (!) this car back from the towing company. It is running ROUGH. I think the engine is knocked out of alignment. I'm not sure about the mounts, but I had to put the fan and battery back in place.
The damage to the panels seems fixable or replaceable, but I'm worried about the interior. I think am going to try and haul it out to a mechanic I know and trust.

Indeed, I saw that event with Top Gear, a Volvo 760 GLE. At 40 MPH that tank truly bull dozed through the makeshift wall and backed-out without a hitch...of course. A true testiment if I may say so, I do believe they knew what they were doing by showing that on the show.
