Default New member: I just bought a 1980 245

Hi guys, new member and total novice here. I just bought a Volvo 245 with a bad engine. I'm about repairing the engine with my mechanic but I need some knowledge about these new cars, I just wanna learn... I'm hoping this forum would help. Looking forward.

Congratulations man!
I just pick up a '81 GLT wagon myself. I'm trying to wrap my head around the K-Jetronic fuel injection... I have no-start fuel issue with car.

I bought the car a couple hours away from my home, after 1 hour of driving, I opened the hood and noticed that a lot of Engine oil had wasted through an opening on the engine where smoke was also coming out. My mechanic told me smoke and oil shouldnt be coming out as the outlet is there for the engine to "breath" and nothing should come out through the opening. He revved the engine and smoke also came out from the exhaust! " time to work on your engine.

hopefully the engine had adequate oil level and pressure during this hour long drive?

first step should be a compression test. the bottom ends of these engines are really robust. if the engine IS toast, its NOT worth rebuilding it unless you have your own machine shop and can do all the work yourself, you'll rapidly exceed the value of the car if you have to pay a shop to do this. instead, you should find another 240, maybe a wreck, with a good motor and swap it. there's someone on this forum who just said they found a brand new-in-wrapping 'crate motor' from a 1992 or something, you';d need to retrofit the fuel injection computers as a 1992 is a B230F 2.3L EFI with LH 2.4 injection and a 1980 is probably CIS aka KE-Jetronics and a 2.0 or 2.1L

Bites: I just pulled a good running engine out of a 1990 240 , its a b230f and I swapped it out for a b230ft. I would be willing to give it to anyone that wanted to pick it up. I am located in Maine though so I am far from everyone. I really hate to use it as a boat anchor but I have no use for it.

Hello guys, my mechanic took down the engine and opened it. Said it has to be ringed again, metals have to be bought, engine sludge removed and a couple other things... He said the engine block is still good though. No compression test. I've given him money for the parts... Hopefully tomorrow, he'll be done tomorrow and we'll have results.
