New to Volvo, need help w/240
Hello,
I'm new to Volvo's, and need help with a 240. I'm trying to help my brother in-law (doesn't even own a screwdriver) with his 240. He lost his job and has no money for a mechanic.
It needs an oxygen sensor and probably a tuneup, oil & filter etc. Can you guys or gals recomend what parts to look at other than plugs, wires, cap&rotor, pcv, airfilter?
What oil works best, 20w-50w?
It's had starting issues(when damp) and idle problems. Code read showed need for O2 sensor replacement, (dealer wants $335.00 just for that.)
Oh yeah, it's a 1991 240 (4dr) auto trans 151,000 miles
Any on-line parts dealers better with Volvo parts?
Any help or comments would help.
Thanks Chris

RE: New to Volvo, need help w/240
Chris. Don't use 20W 50 in that 4 cyl. I would start out by replacing the plugs, cap and rotor and inspect the wires. Most parts houses are ok for that like Advance. The O2 sensor is another story. I have never had much luck with aftermarket sensors. You are better off buying them from the dealer. Also if there are 2 which I can't remember change both at the same time. The throttle body probably needs cleaning and the idle air motor. It's an easy job and will improve the drivability. Do not use carburetor cleaner on those. It will eat up the plastic sensors on the throttle body. Tom

Thanks Tom,
I found out later looks like 10-30 is the oil to go wth. I 'll try cleaning the throttle body out as well,(did that on my Dodge). Can I just order the correct Bosch online or does the dealer have a different number. I'm seeing a $100.00 to $125.00 difference in price, of coarse there's is installed.
Anyone else want to put on there $.02 worth?
