Default 1990 740 non turbo

Hello,
Having trouble cold starting car. If it's under 30 it will start sputter then if it stays running it will be fine. If it stalls it will not start again. It will turn over but not fire. Had it to the garage they changed rotor plugs etc.. checked the fuel pressure reg. It stays pressurized. They said it could be the idle control motor (valve?) and it will be about 300 to 400 dollars. any ideas

thanks
Pat

Try to replace your RSR, swap it with your aux fan relay. It will probably be your problem. Been there, done that. This was my fix.

BTW RSR, is your Radio suppression relay. It is one of the two relays attached to the overflow reseviour for your radiator.

Both relays are exactly alike. However, one is for Fuel injectors (RSR), and the other is for your fan in front of your radiator. I removed both, and resoldered them, have yet to have the problem again. I then bought two more from the junkyard, and keep them in my glove box, along with an extra Fuel pump, Bulb out, and K relays for my headlights, just in case I get stuck somewhere.

I've had all these problems, and found in most cases, it is relay related. They get old, and solder joints get cold, and seperate.

Also check the white relay in the fuse box.
See what the date is that is stamped on the side of it. Most of them will only last 5 years.

I feel ebay is your best shot for the best price. I got mine for $25, and the volvo dealer wanted $50. Oh the one i got from ebay was brand new as well.

For location, the Fuel Pump (White) relay, the K(silver) relay, and the bulb out (Red Cylindrical), are all behind your ashtray console, under the radio, and behind the fuses.
The fan, and RSR relays (both black) are right next to each other, attached to your radiator overflow tank.

If you are looking for a price & location to purchase; the dealership is Extremely expensive. The junkyard has them, but in some cases, you may have to re-solder these, also. They are also on online auctions (ebay, etc...) is where you can find most, and they are definately in between junkyard, and dealer prices.
