Default Odometer problems

The odometer on my 1989 240DL has stopped working. This occurred after I removed the instrumental panel to replace some bulbs and the water temperature gauge. After reconnecting and reinstalling, everything works fine except the odometer. The speedometer is working perfectly, though.

I did some research and saw that this problem can be caused by stripped/worn gears inside the speedometer housing. So I pulled it and checked all the gears but they all look brand new. I manually rotated the gears inside the housing to rule out a mechanical jam. I cleaned all the connections (which seemed unnecessary since the speedometer is working).

I am now thinking it might be the motor or VDO board on the speedometer/odometer. Does anyone have ANY ideas or suggestions?

Thanks.

I have the same problem but do not wish to spend the $435 for a new speedo/odometer If you come up with a solution let me know. I am thinking along the lines of an autometer programable speedo I think they cost about$ 110. I am wonering if I can find one that will fit.

Hello Guys
I just joined the forum. With respect to the inoperable odometer, I just purchased a 1989 240DL. I've the same problem, therefore I will be very interested in the fix. cuzzboy@direcway.com

I have not come up with a solution, but I did find this website that offers to fix speedometers/odometers. They specificially mention the problem with the Volvo speedometer/odometer.

I have not contacted them yet, but thought I would post this for anyone interested.

I've got a similar problem, only that both the speedo and the odometer have both stopped. (Tach as well). I've checked the instruments, and the wiring for what I can.

Is there any way of testing the sensor using common tools? And what about the instrument cluster?

Any help would be gratefully appreciated.

Iain
