Default Odometer/Water Temp

We just got our 18 year old daughter a 93 240 wagon w 180k miles. Seems to run great and we know the previous owners. The speedometer works fine but the odo and trip meter died about 20k ago. The water temp gauge is not working either. What to do? Easy fixes? Not easy fixes? Might use some seat covers too. Any good places to look?
Any help appreciated.

Both problems your are having are pretty common to the 240. Both are pretty easy fixes, minimal tools.

There is a gear in the odometer that commonly fails, you can get a replacement at the like below.

The temp gauge has a compensator board that is a disaster. The link below is for a jumper that will allow you to remove the board and completely bypass it, works great. You can make your own jumper for free, but the instructions are no longer available.

Thanks for the help with this. Will it be pretty obvious in the directions as to how to install these fixes? Like how do you get to the speedometer and then take it apart? Or should I just take it a mechanic, (ugh).

For the odometer fix go to this site for the step by step pictorial

http://www.hyperocity.com/volvo240/volvoodometer.htm

I would buy the gear directly from Jeff @ Odometer Gears (heis the manufacturer and ships immediately)

For the temperature compensation baord bypass you can go here. Scroll down to the pictures (about the fourth post down). You should do this at the same time you replace the odometer gear as you will have to pull the instrument cluster to perform either task. Also, I can't remember where I read it, but one poster said that a major contributor of the odometer gear breaking was from using the reset button on the odometer (I removed mine).
