I've got a 1992 940 GLE with 263,510 miles.

It's not due for an oil change yet, but I need to put about half a quart in it.

It's hot now, so I was wondering if I should go for a thicker oil.

Any recommendations? Also, any benefits to synthetic?

 

10W30 unless you live in the mojave desert and its summer, then use 15w40, or you live in the colorado rockies or northern vermont and its the depths of sub-zero winter, when you might want to use 5w30

I use synthetic (mobil 1) on turbos, I think its overkill on a non-turbo. any quality major brand should be fine.

 

I doubt you have a GLE which is designation for the 16 valve motor in the 90's B234F motor which was not available in 1992. You most likely have a GL with a B230F? You don't need any special oil if your engine is in a good nick... 10w30 is fine.
