Where are you located and how cold does it get there? What is the summer like?

10W30 for all weather except extended deep sub-zero conditions, where 5W30 might be suitable (however, you do not want to use 5W30 above about 68F/20c ambient temps).

We have an 89 GL with 336,000 miles on it. We live in the north east. We purchased the car new and it has had oil changes every 3-5K miles. Car came with 10W-40 dino oil and that is what we use today.

I live in mid west and i found this combination to be ideal - November to March end/April - 5W30. Rest of the year use 10W30. My car has 267K on it and this combination is working out best for me.

10W40 is too thick for cold weather use. might be a good choice in the summer int he desert southwest, although Volvo recommended 15W40 for very hot conditions.

here's the owners manual oil table... (1 page down)

any motor oil sold has all the additives it needs. stuff like STP oil treatment is snakeoil, it just thickens your oil by an indeterminate amount, raising its SAE numbers to who knows what.
