Default Overdrive on all the time?

I was looking at old posts about overdrive repair and found (attached below) a thread that used a jumper to have the overdrive on all the time.My overdrive has never worked. Can the overdrive be on all the time without damaging the car? Thank you

Status: offline i just picked up an 89 240 DL automatic and the overdrive isn't working. The lil switch on the shifter doesn't stick in one position and i'm wondering if it's an electric overdrive that may just need a switch or relay--or is top gear gone in the car?
i'm not familiar with it...so any help would be appreciated.
thanks,
white trash steve.

Status: offline There is a relay in the dash in the middle for this. Have you checked fuse #11? On the relay you can jump terminal 30 and 87 to have the OD on all the time

Status: offline yeah that happened to me. I had to replace the overdrive relay, then the solenoid went out on the button or something, then i soldered some random connections, now the overdrive is permanently on [align=right]

Status: offline Check your fuse. If the fuse is good. Then replace the relay ( which is located to the left of the glove box behind the center a/c vents ). Then check the white wire that runs from the shifter to the overdrive solonoid. A lot of times this wire will loose some insulation and short out against the transmission case. Simply take some vacuum line slit it lengthwise and slide over the bare wire to prevent this from happening.

Check this resource out, it's good stuff.

...My aw71's final gear was failing/not engaging. The mechanic sugested it was the solenoid...back then I had no idea what the buzz was, so I just swapped in an M-47. You should check the whole resource out and research things. Hope it helps.
