Default Possible fuel problems 1990 240DL Wagon

Recently, I was driving along when the car started to run rough, loss of power, sputtering, to the point I had to pull to the side of the road, the engine had finally quit. Out of desparation and having limited tools onboard, I opened the air filter housing and cranked the car again. It fired right up, continued my drive home with zero problems. Does this sound like the fuel pump relay? I am reasonably certain opening the air filter housing did not make a difference (the filter was not that dirty) but just to be safe I am replacing it.

Thanks in advance

It could be the fuel pump relay. If it's over 10 years old I would replace it just on general principles. But opening the air box would be unrelated to the fuel pump relay.

Check the air box thermostat. It controls a flapper valve to mix outside air with heated air from the exhaust manifold.

Thanks for the advice, I did replace the fuel pump relay. Another other general principle type things you would replace? I believe in replacing things on my terms if possible, rather than being stranded on the side of the road situations.

Agreed. Also the 25-amp fuse holder on the left fender, although they may have moved it by '90. Another is the overdrive relay. Is your RPM sensor original (also called crank position sensor)? It's on top of the bell housing behind the engine. You can either see it or feel it, not both at the same time. It helps if you have skinny hands.
