Default Power Steering spring and bleeding

89 240, Just replaced one of the power steering hoses, steering seems "not power" like manual steering. Manual says something about bleeding the system after having it opened. How do I do this?

Also, when I loosened the top connection, the fitting with the arrow loosened, I hack sawed the hose, removed the fitting and seperated the two fittings on the vice. MAN was that tight! On the fitting with the arrow is there a spring in there (on top of a little piston)? It came apart so fast I got the sense I lost something, never found a spring. Thanks! Dave

Bleed it by turning steering wheel from one extreme to the other, thats it.

I don't know for sure but if there was a spring there might have been a ball to form a checkvalve.
You could call or email FCP Groton and ask them, I'm sure they'd know.

Jones- I did the bleeding procedure, still steers like no PS. musthave lost something. I think there is a spring, then a piston then a spring. the last one is what I think i've lost. Groton said they have no idea. maybe I'll call them sometime other than friday at 4:00. What I really need is a schematic. Thanks! Dave

Check the volvo 240 greenbooks, here for detailed exploded views
I didn't really look at it so I don't know what page it might be on.

Personally I would just replace the whole suspect part,
you didn't say what the hose was connected to power steering pump or rack or reservoir ,
I doubt you can buy the tiddly bits by themself even if you know whats lost.
Or junk yard another part. Ebay is always an option.

Jones- I went over to the junkyard this morning- no luck, just a few 740s. The connection is up on the pump, and the hose runs down to the rack. Might try calling the "dreaded" dealer monday about the spring. By now I'm convinced ive lost something in there. Dave

Not much changes on the B230 engines and accessories,
double check me but I think the steering pump fits from 240 to 740.

check the serial numbers on FCPGroton, OEM serial # 1359652 listed for both models.

http://www.fcpgroton.com/product-exe...ategory_id/176

Pull the one out in the 740 at the junk yard and look for the lost part.

It pays to read the FAQ files on any repair to learn of any pointers to watch out for.

I just read it for you, you've lost part of the pressure control valve.
Pressure can be increased by stretching the spring.!

Jones- from brickboard:
"In order to increase the pressure output of the pump, I stretched the spring of the control valve. Originally 5cm long, it is now 5.5 cm long. The result is more power assist making the steering act more like I believe it should have all along. It will be interesting to see what happens when the weather gets colder. "

I think I read this exactly same brickboard post on Friday. The spring on the control valve- thats the thing I think I lost.

I tried to go to that green board site and it said it was unsecure- like my computer would infect the whole office and town. didnt go there.

I thought about picking through a 740, but anything of use was gone already. think I'll call groton and ask for that spring control valve. Dave
