my 89 240 has a bad windshield leak. I figured I'd pull the trim and try to pump some black goop in there to get it to seal again..

I went to try to do that and realized if I cut the rubber to bits maybe I can get the trim strip off without turning it into a pretzel, but I'm not getting it back in with that rubber seal since the rubber turned petrified...

today I'm going to try to mask everything but the crack between the strip and the windshield and se if I can coax a bunch of goo down the open crack with a putty knife.. I blew it out with alcohol and an air blower to try to clean in there.. I figure if I can fill the underside of the trim strip it should ooze out near the hood vent cowling a little on the other side to tell me its getting full.. ..

not sure if this will work. I think if it fails I can cut the rubber and wash my goo off with solvent I might get the trim the strip back if I don't bend it all up..

one design flaw I found was that the bottom of the car is dish shaped and it doesn't have a bung or a bilge pump to drain the bilge so rather than trying to turn it over, I drilled a few holes in the floor.. :-)
It may have been intentional because 3 inches of ice on the floor. the added ballast does improve traction in the snow. It also lowers the center of gravity.

You know you drive a beater when every time you fix your car you cherish the thought that you just saved it from the scrapyard.

 

that seemed to work well. I just left as little gap in my tape and used some rubber sealant. I got almost the whole tube in there under the trim strip.

if it still doesn'tt seal it will need a new windshield gasket and to pull it all apart but I think it will work ok.

 

the black goop RTV approach should work fine. I've had occasion to get a couple of windshields replaced and they compliment the seal with a bead of RTV.
