Default Recline retainer

I need to get my drivers seat reupholstered. It is far cheaper to be able to bring in just the fabric and put it back on myself. So, I need to remove the seat fabric but I don't know the technique for removing the retainer on the recline ****. Anybody have any ideas? I will see if I can get a picture up soon.

The retainer is a flat disk that goes over a small diameter rod with a groove cut in it. The four fingers on the retainer go into the groove and this keeps the recline **** in place.

I have gotten them off in the past by mangling them but there has to be a better way.

I have never found a real elegant way to remove that ring, may be twisting it out with a pair of angled pliers/channel locks? It is probably intended as a one time use part...

Thanks for the drawing Pierce. It looks to be 38. It is a small flat steel disk with 4 holes in addition to the hole in the center with 4 retaining fingers. I managed to remove it by inserting two sheetmetal screws into two of the holes and pulling an twisting with Vice-grips on the screws. It came off in good enough shape to reuse.

Next step is looking for a good upper foam piece. Someone had these new. I will probably look to see if I can get a cheap passenger seat at a yard first. Then in addition to the foam, I'll also get some other bits.

Thanks for the reply Lev. Even when the advice is that it is a difficult task, it still helps. At least I feel like I am not the only one struggling. BTW I found the technique that I used on Turbobricks.
