Default Removing camshaft oil seal

While replacing my 940's timing belt I tried to replace the cam gear oil seal and bent every pick and hook tool that I tried without any success
How aggessive can you get without damaging something else? What are your favorite tools to do this job?
thanks, bob

Use a seal puller or screwdriver, seal pullers a available from any parts store for 5 to 10 bucks.Small pick tools will not remove a the seal.

Default Seal puller

Thanks Dan for pointing me in right direction. I'll pick one up tomorrow.
Thanks for the picture also.

Much better way is to just remove the cam retainer that holds that seal in place. No scratching, no frustration... just have to remove the valve cover first.

Yet another option, which way would the seal come out then, towards engine or away?
thanks, bob

I tried a utility knife when the "pick" attempt failed and I didn't seem to be getting anywhere. Afraid of scoring the metal, I gave up on that.

btw, when the new seal goes on, do you use any lube on the shaft?

thanks, bob

well, you can slip it in between the seal and the cam shaft and since you are getting rid of the seal anyways, go to the side and pull it out towards you. When you go to put the new one on I like to pack the pack of the seal with grease so it kinda holds that little spring in better.

Thanks, grease sounds good.

And thanks to the forum for sharing your experience and knowledge.
