Default Removing the oil pan on a 940

As the title states. My oil pan has been jb welded a few times and I 'd like to fix this the right way but it looks like there was a reason they just patched it. I've read around and it seems you need to lift the motor up and do something from there. this is my first volvo but I'm pretty good with a wrench, I'm probably gonna do a dry run at the junkyard first, any advice on doing this

-Thanks Gregg

If your 940 is like my 1990 240DL, then the issue is with the transmission dipstick support bracket. If you can't disconnect the dipstick tube from the pan because the nut won't loosen without shearing the tube, then you'll need to remove the tube's support bracket. The tube's support bracket is secured by the same bolts that mount the starter. These bolts just need to be loosened to remove the starter but they must be removed to unsecure the transmission dipstick support bracket so that you can remove the transmission pan. On my car, there is not enough clearance with the underbody/floorpan to allow the bolts to be removed. Looked to me like the only way to get the necessary clearance is to lift the motor, as you stated.

"Lifting the motor" means jacking it up just enough to make enough clearance to remove the pan, and it's not that difficult even if you have to loosen the motor mounts a little. That support tube/starter bolt is a little tough without a long, preferably 1/2 inch extension, much depends on rust, previous removal, etc.
