Revs high on startup and stalls
I have a 1982 Volvo 240 with the B23A engine.
We have had some serious snow here lately and while driving down an unplowed road the car stalled. Opening the hood the engine bay was packed with snow right up to the hood. We towed it home and got it in the garage to melt the snow away. Now the car won’t run properly. It will start up on choke and imediatly rev up to 3500 rpm, stay there for about 5-10 seconds and then either stall or go back up again.
I started to trouble shooting and found that the timing belt on the camshaft was of by one thooth and the intermediate shaft by almost 90°. I made sure to reset the engine properly by checking the marks and make sure cylinder 1 was in TDC with both cam lobes pointing upwards when replacing the timing belt. I havs replaced the condensator and breaker points. I have cleaned out the carburetor and made sure it has oil, i have checked the ignition coil, i have checked the inlet manifold, i have checked the fuel pump (it’s a mechanical one), i have checked the engines compression and i have checked vaccum hoses but can’t find what’s
The symptom of reving up seems to me as if it wont get enough fuel, like it’s running out, but maybe the timing is of? If the cam sprocket somehow is in the wrong position (broken or missing woodruff)... my next step will be to take of the cam cover to check that valves are not engaged when the cam marking is in position. Still, i don’t think this will be the solution. Seems more like fuel problem, but my brain is out of ideas.
If anyone has some base settings for tje carburetor that would be great. It’s a Stromberg 175 CDUS (yellow cap of centered). If some one have had the same issues with reving and stalling, please let me know what the solution was in your case.
