Roof Racks on Wagons
Hi all,
My name is Murph. I've been mostly lurking for the past many months as I search for an x45 wagon. Originally I wanted a 245 but I seem to have gravitated towards the 745's, and maybe a 945 if it jumps out in front of me.
Anyway. It's not a "need to" buy, so I can afford the time to keep shopping until I find what I want. One of the items on my list of desires was a roof rack. For some reason I think they add to the classic Volvo look, plus I imagine it might be useful sometime.
What is the general consensus on these things? When I did a search I only found two posts, and they were about removing the rack. What are the negatives to having one? I guess I'm just looking for good advice to re-evaluate my needs.
Thanks
Murph

I don't know if this is what you are looking for, but we are happy to have our roof rack on our V70. In this post you can see we used it to strap down a car-top carrier loaded with stuff. That was really nice when we had a large load to transport.

I hate them. I got the one off the 940 asap and threw it away. It rattled, and made the car uglier, less streamlined. Besides, it was installed via these holes drilled into the body (roof), a NO-NO as far as I am concerned, and it had that cheap Ford/GM quality to it. No doubt a dealer installed tack-on profit center at the time, but pretty useless as the recommended max weight is something like 50lbs.

Wow, max weight 50lbs. That's not a lot.Sounds like you can put your bikes, surfboards andskiis at least. I guess mine worked for me because the weight of the carrier was on the roof, not the rack. The rack was merelyfor tying it down. Mine is well-fitted, no rattling, I don't care about looks (it's a station wagon!).
I guess it comes down to personal opinion and maybe the quality of your rack.
