Default Seat belt hard to engage

Sigh....my 1988 740 Wagon's passenger seat belt is increasingly difficult to engage. One needs to insert the gizmo with the belt into the latching part, then press down hard and then hit the gizmo with one's fist.

Last time we had something like that happen, ir was on our 1983 240 and our mechanic had to replace the whole seat belt assembly (not cheap!).

WD-40 and the like don't help. Anyone have a fix for this?

Thanks in advance

If lube doesn't work, the thing is plain worn out, replacement is the only option. A junkyard would be your best bet for getting the parts, labor should be minimal, easy DIY job...
