Default Speedometer not working

My instrument cluster on a 1994 940 non-turbo was swapped out because of a problem with the alternator not charging.Whenever the SRS light was on the alternator wouldn't charge. The light began to stay on all the time. I'm not sure what year the replacement was from but it was from a turbo model. Regardless, the problem was solved and everything seemed fine. Now, however the speedometer is not working. Is there any pointers I can give to my mechanic, who is not use to working on Vovlos what to look for? I suspect it could have to do with the cluster, then again it might just be mechanical. I just don't want to go thru a series of dead-ends. Any help would be greatly appreciated! Since the cluster was swapped out I have moved to the middle of nowhere and this is a different mechanic.

That model is not mechanically connected via a cable to the trany...it is electronic and mostlikely the "famous freaking plastic cog" that goes bad...inside the cluster...

You can buy the replacement cog along with an instructional DVD from IPDUSA.COM....25 dollars I think...

I think the cog is for the odometer on 240's only.

The electronic speedo on 740/940 is problematic and has pretty much a 100% failure rate. If you're really lucky it'll just be a bad pickup, which is located on the rear axle.

Here's an old thread on this subject.. https://volvoforums.com/forum/volvo-240-740-940-12/$1200-speedometer-fix-2078/

It's most likely the capacitors described in the write up... like 99% chance.

As long as it works... Hit and miss proposition. '93,'94 will work, not sure about a '95...

speedos are pretty year specific, also ABS vs non-ABS specific (but most 9's have ABS). I have one of the dreaded 1992's with a flakey speedo, replacing the caps did NOT fix it (even though they were leaky), and I can't use a newer cluster without also changing the fuel pressure sender or my fuel gauge will read wrong :-/
