So when i got about a 1/4 tank of gas my car starts too sputter when i get on the gas a little bit and i have a few ideas but i was just wondering if anyone had this problem or knows what it could be and oh ya its a 78 so could be the age. ideas?

 

A common failure is when the hose that connects the in-tank pump to the metal lines goes bad (rotten) it starts sucking air instead of gas. If you listen to the main pump you might hear surge, change sound with the air.

 

I think Volvos as old as ours only have the external pump, having just one pump can cause fuel delivery issues when the tank gets low. Mine did that, but it only does it when it gets real low since I replaced my fuel filter. That's a real easy job on my car 'cause it's in the engine compartment, but yours might might be next to the fuel pump.
