Steering column clunks.... u-joints?
'92 745 GLA w/ 150k. When turning the steering wheel at least a whole turn and more, you can feel and hear a repeated clunk in the wheel. I have oiled the u-joints in the column but I suspect they're damaged. I had this problem with my '95 Jeep Wrangler and it went away with a little oil... Anyone had worn/rusty/failed steering column u-joints? Thanks, c.

I'd be checking the inner tie rod joints. jack up the front wheels, and grab each wheel at 3 and 9 oclock, and rock them back and forth, with the steering wheel locked close to the center, do you feel any clunk-clunk thats not the wheel turning? pull the plastic belly pan, pull the rubber boot covers back so you can see the inner balljoints on the end of the steering rack, and have someone rock the wheel while you feel (with a disposable glove) to see if the rocking is in that joint.... there's a couple different brands of racks in these cars, they take 2 different sorts of replacement inner ball joints, so you need to make sure you get the right parts for your car. its a easy job to replace them (hint, a medium sized plumbers pipe wrench comes in real handy for unscrewing the old ones, and if they don't have a 'keeper flange' that you tap down on a flange, use some locktite on the new one so it wont come loose. count thread turns when you unscrew them from the outer tie rod tips, and put them back the same, and odds are your front wheels will be close to aligned, I checked my toe-in with a tape measure before and after tweaking so the car drove straight with the wheel centered...
