Default strange squeak at half throttle?

sooo when ever i accelerate at half throttle i hear a squeaking sound but only for as long as i have the throttle at half.
if i push the peddle down slow the noise still happens at half throttle but slower
its not the belt
and if i hold at half throttle the noise stays as long as long as i hold
iv tryed every thing i can think of
has anyone had the same problem?
its driving me nuts

is this squeak speed and RPM independent? does it happen at half throttle in 2nd gear going up a steep hill, and sound the same as half throttle in overdrive cruising on the freeway? if you're accelerating at half throttle in a given gear, is the sound constant?

I usually only notice it in 4th gear while cruising (4sp car) but now that you ask I can hear it in all 4spds at the same point in the throtle
It does not change with rpm it seems to be related only to the throttle position
It also does not increase when going up out down hill
I'm totally lost can't figure it out!

this is an automatic w/ overdrive 4 speed? next time its squeaking, without moving the throttle, switch off the OD so the car drops to third, and see if it changes sounds. the RPMs will go from ~3000 at 65mph to about 4000rpm, plenty safe.

It sounds like you have checked the belts. Sometimes this can be the crank pulley, since the inner and outer halves are separated by rubber which can break down over time.

It is a m46 manual trans overdrive doesnt work anyways
I get the squeek in all 4 gears
Its not a belt.
Crank pulley looks fine
It will hold if I hold at half throttle

I'm not sure the 1983 B23F had those rubber 'harmonic dampers' that the later cars did. but yeah, I'm betting its a belt thing too, thats the commonest cause of engine squeaks. it *could* be the driveshaft center support bearing hanger, too. its not really that you're at half throttle, its that you're cruising steady at medium speed.

if you can do it in 1st, get someone on a bicycle to pace you and see if they can tell if the sound is from under the car or the engine.

another trick I've used, drive along side a cement wall on your left with the driver side down, so your car's sound is reflected back at you, like a barrier wall in a center divider. if you listen carefully, you can usually tell if its coming from the front, back or middle

is it a steady state whistle kind of sound? that could be an exhaust leak...

Many times you cannot tell visually when the crank pulley has separated. The easiest way is to check using a timing light. If it has separated, then the timing mark will be off. Just connect your timing light to the #1 spark plug wire and see if the timing mark on the pulley lines up with the timing mark on the timing belt cover. If the mark on the pulley is not visible or you see it jumping all over the place, then most likely the pulley is bad.

On other cars, I have had vacuum leaks that can cause a sqeaking noise. If a vacuum leak is causing the noise, then I would expect that as soon as you hit the throttle hard, the squeak would disappear.

The noise is not related to RPM or speed
its the same pitch no matter the speed
It didn't seen to be rotational
It sounds like more of a squeek than a whistle but it must be something with the throtle body our the intake
But it only happens at half throtle

to me, a 'squeak' is a noise thats modulated, like squeak-squeak-squeak, usually associated with something thats rotating. a squeal or a whistle is a continuous noise.

if its a constant frequency(pitch) regardless of RPM or speed, then its likely to be a high pitched whistle from air or exhaust moving past a small leak, although I'd expect those to modulate in volume with the RPM due to the change in airflow (the pitch would be constant but the volume would be louder at some air flows).
