Default Strut rod help [ 740 turbo ]

Looking for some help,

I installed some strut rods on my '90 740 Turbo a little while ago, but I believe I may have put in the wrong ones... I remember looking around on forums and I thought I saw someone say something about there being two different strut rod sizes; one being slightly larger than the other. I'm only skeptical that I have the wrong ones because it was a bitch to install them. Normally that's supposed to take 20 minutes, but it took me almost 4 hours. Am I crazy?

Here's the exact one I put on my 740.

Anything helps,
Thanks

I don't believe there are different sizes, and they are for your car according to the IPD charts and they are usually reliable. The poly bushings are much stiffer and may be that's why it was harder to install them.

Exactly what type of difficulty did you experience, was the alignment not good? If they were bigger than what you needed I doubt you could have installed them at all. These 740/940 suspension are pretty standard, steering racks vary as do brakes parts but the suspensions are the same across the series.

I struggled greatly with aligning the strut rod. It was very hard to get the holes aligned. I also have been having a problem where whenever I turn my steering wheel all the way to either the left of the right, the belt starts to bind. I thought that the larger struts may have something to do with that. Also am I allowed to put links to other forums in here? I found the forum I was referring to.

Well, OK, there may be some aftermarket mods. Looks like you got the standard rods from IPD. I have had many, many 740/940 pass through my hands and never had a problem or need for longer rods to eliminate wheel shimmy. Unless you drive off road the OEM stuff lasts 200k miles. Do you have longer struts too? These are the problems you get when you start to do mods.

I haven’t done any mods to the car. I’m not sure why it was hard to get them in. What could possibly be damaged to resort in that?

These are aftermarket poly bushing rods! If they are just slightly off (very possible) they will be hard to align. Measure them, compare them to the original ones to verify.

You mentioned "larger struts" that's why I mentioned "mods". Larger struts may affect the geometry of the suspension making it harder to install the rods...

I appreciate all the help! I’ll give that a shot and shoot a response on this post letting you know how it goes/what I discover!

Here's what makes it easy - start the nuts on the strut mount that bolts to the body, but DONOT tighten. That keep things loose and allow you to get the strut rod and control arm started. Once you have everything started then you can torque them down. I like to torque down the pivot points of both the control arm and the strut rod while the car is up on ramps, resting on it's own weight. That puts the car in a neutral position at rest and you'll get an equal amount of resistance whether it's compressing or rebounding.
