Default Sunroof repair

Hello all!

I've searched multiple places and to no avail, I have not been able to find the necessary parts to repair the sunroof on my 1987 240 DL. I can't find cables, gears, crank housing, any of it. Does anyone have any ideas of what I can do?

Go to a junkyard... preferably the self-service type.

if the cables are actually broken beyond being repairable, your best bet is to find a complete sunroof from another car. you can use the sunroof in any 740/940/760/960. you can take the roof panel off your old one and put it on the replacement for the paint color, ditto the liner, use your old liner if the new one has a different tint head liner. the 960s had glass moon roofs which should be bolt in compatible.

to remove them, you have remove the gasket from around the headliner at the sunroof opening and drop the headliner down enough that you can get between it and the roof. there's a drain hose at each corner you'll need to disconnect, then slide the sunroof back and from above, remove the screws holding the the mechanism cover along the front, and the screws holding side rails down, then the whole assembly should be free and you should be able to extract it from the inside of the car through the lowered head liner.

volvo DOES have new cables, they are $50+ each

I suggested replacing the whole thing as odds are if your cables are shot, the rest of the mechanism is badly worn, too.

note btw, if you have a power sunroof, you can replace the motor with the handcrank assembly from a car so equipped (more likely on an older 740). just be sure to get the interior trim pieces from the donor car.

Hello,
Wow. Now I know... I was figuring that only 740 would fit, This has opened many more units. I called 18 junk yards yesterday and 1 had it, but it was a 6 hours round trip. I will be taking some tools with me now that I know 740/940/760/960 will fit. Thanks... I live in the east coast central fla. will go to Orlando that's were the salvage yards are. Thanks again. Douger.

Unfortunatly i can say from expierence that they're not all as interchangeable as you imagine them to me. I have a 90 240 Dl thats gone without a sunroof for nearly 2 years now( Its My Only Car So You Bet It Got Driven In The Rain And Snow. ) I Could Never Find A Sunroof Model ( Hand Crank ) Untill About A Week Ago When I Pulled A Manual Sunroof Out Of A 88 740 Having Faith In The Car's Likeness. But Its To Big And On A Totally different track system. unless you know a secret I Dont?

240 is NOT interchangable with the 700/900 series. Only the 700 series are interchangable with the 900 series.
