Tail Pipe

Tail Pipe
All the 200, 700 and 900 series volvos have a unique "S" shaped 1 3/4" tail pipe.
My 940 pipe rusted off at the resonator clamp and I think that milage improved by about 1 mpg. So I replaced the pipe with a 2 inch straight pipe that took care of the noise and kept the new mpg. There must be less back-pressure.
Do you know the history and reason for the "S" pipe?

Check response to this question under 940, 960 postings on another Volvo forum called www.volvo-forum.com. It's a very logical reason.
