All the 200, 700 and 900 series volvos have a unique "S" shaped 1 3/4" tail pipe.

My 940 pipe rusted off at the resonator clamp and I think that milage improved by about 1 mpg. So I replaced the pipe with a 2 inch straight pipe that took care of the noise and kept the new mpg. There must be less back-pressure.

Do you know the history and reason for the "S" pipe?

 

I've been wondering the same thing, why does Volvo use that type of tip? Surely someone out there knows the answer.
