Default Are those fill in and drain bolts for real differential on 1993 Volvo 240

Hello all,

I need advice please, looking to replace differential oil on Volvo 240 1993 wagon and need to make sure that the bolts that I have marked on the picture are correct one. I will remove fill in plug first of course.

Thank you

that is indeed the fill plug, but I believe the drain plug is on the BOTTOM of the diff, what you marked is one of the cover plate bolts.

make sure you can remove the fill plug *before* you drain it... it really sucks if you dump all the oil, then find the fill plug strips before you can get it off.

Thank you for your fast response. When you say on the bottom , you are saying that there is literary bolt under the differential that I havent seen and is not on the pic..

Thank you so much! I am looking forward doing maintenance on my old lady. Just needed to make sure I know what I am doing.
I have actually bough gasket from IPD and was planning to remove plate and clean it really well, but then I read about how many people have leaks, s I have decided to keep it simple and only replace the oil.

Thank you again,

yeah, if it ain't broke, don't fix it it... now, if when you open it up, some kinda nasty black sludge oozes out, then maybe ... and certainly, clean the vicinity of the plugs really good before pulling them so crap doesn't get inside...

otherwise? geez, we put close to 500000 miles on our 240, and I don't believe ever did any differential service beyond a couple oil changes. the transmission needed a rebuild around 250K or 300K, as it was starting to slip under load...

Open the fill plug, and CAUTION, it is really soft metal, very easy to strip! Then stick something in there to see the level AND condition of the oil. If it is not bad, leave it alone, top it off if need be...

I forget to follow up on this thread , but it looks like that on my 1993 differential , drain is actually on that bottom screw that I have initially marked on the pics. Just for future readers can learn from this.

I have two 1993 240 Classics. The drain plug is the bolt on the back plate that you have circled. And you correctly circled the fill plug.
