Default Drain plug from Hell!

So I'm on my second attempt to change my oil and I'm no rookie in that dept.
My first attempt found a overly torque drain plug and the incorrect wrench sizes.
Second attempt - Full complement of sockets and wrenches - except none of them seem to be the right size! 18mm is too big and 17 seems almost right but the bolt is on so hard it started to strip so I stopped, It's not a 7/8 or an inch so what size is this stupid drain plug on my '97 960 and why does a mechanic tighten a oil drain plug tighter than a cars lugnuts? Can't wait to attempt the oil filter.

I would just use a bolt extractor and get a new one. In the opposite order actually.

I'd use a pair of BIG VISE GRIPS... You may also try heating with an acetylene torch prior to...
