Default Drain and Fill Process

Hey, I have a 2001 Volvo S60 T5 with an automatic transmission (geartronic). I was going to do a transmission drain and fill, but was wondering if anyone can give me the step by step process of doing this procedure. I wanted to be able to do it myself but was unsure of where the drain plug was for the trans, and how to do the job right. I am planning on buying a case of Mobil 3309 ATF fluid. I just need to know the process. Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks!

here is how it worked on my '03 (the same?)

remove the under engine splash shield.

the drainplug is the 24mm male hex head plug on the lower vertical face of the transmission case facing the engine. It is a Magnetic plug so will need to be cleaned off before reinstalling. I was a able to drain just about 4 litres of fluid out, I did jack up the vehicle on the left side to give me more room and this may help get a little more fluid out when draining.

Fill the transmission through the dipstick tube, put in exactly the amount you removed, or less, better to err on the low side and add more after warming up and checking. When you do check do it with the engine running and the transmission hot. Drive it around a little and drain and fill again, as many times as you want, 3 times gets over 80% of the old fluid out. I could not get the Mobil fluid so I got the TIV form Toyota. I only did it twice as my car was not bad and I plan on doing it again when I change the oil next and then doing it once every other oil change from here on out....

Thanks RGT,

A question though, when you drain the 4 liters, do you need to put the plug back in before the filling process. So basically drain, put plug and screws back and then fill?

Ok, so I bought 6 liters of mobil 3309 and I already have 2 & 1/2 liters that I bought from the volvo dealership awhile ago. My question now is if I drain and fill twice, I should have enough fluid because it is about 4 liters that comes out of each drain? I am planning to drain twice so that should total 8 liters?
